6. MAN’S TUBULAR GARMENT Palembang, South Sumatra 19th century Weft ikat and supplementary weft Dimensions: 7' 3 1/2" x 3' 6 3/8" (2.22 x 1.07 m) |
Description: A central section called a kepala or head features interlocking triangular forms that appear to harken back to the Palembang's origin as the center of the Hindu Srivijaya empire in the 9th - 10th century. On either side of the kepala are alternating rosette motifs that are formed in weft ikat and overlaid with gold thread. This design as well has ancient origins in South Sumatra. This garment would have been the prerogative of a noble man. Condition: Excellent. The gold is of very high quality and as the garment was never sewn together it is likely that it was never used so there are no signs of wear, which is very rare. The cloth also retains its original glazing which gives the silk quite a shine. There are a few tiny holes like pin pricks. Provenance: I collected this textile in the late 70's and it has been in a very good private collection since then. Detail: close-up view |
